Oil Temp Sensor Location?

Where is the best place to place the oil temp sensor?
In the oil pan port? (non-stock pan)

Or in the block just above the stock filter location?

I was thinking auxillary port. I don't have an oil cooler just yet, but I will. Would the pan be better since it is the oil temp just prior to being pumped to the bearings? Would the block port measure just prior to the bearings as well?

Re: Oil Temp Sensor Location?

What would you want an "oil temp" sensor for???? Even if you did know what your oil temp was, what would that mean? What's normal???? What's high???

This will be a road race car.
Oil temp is critical.
Good? 270 & below.
Bad? 300 and above (very bad).

Re: Oil Temp Sensor Location?

I put a oil temp sensor in the block over the filter and had issues with false readings from the left side CAT which is right there by it. I finally fabrecated a heat shield for it. BTW with a factory oil cooler the only time you ever see oil temps much higher than water temp is stuck in traffic. I never drove it fast enough, long enough on the highway to see it rise much but I'm sure it would on a road race car. I personally do not believe that the factory oil cooler is the devil like most people do, but that's just me.

Re: Oil Temp Sensor Location?

I think i'm going to wire the harness for both locations.
I'll put it in the pan for now, then I'll add a second sender to the block location later (when I place another summit order). I'll splice 'em together w/ a toggle switch then I can look at both locations.
I have the stock water/oil cooler on my Z28. I've never had any problems w/ it either. I'll be using a heavy duty oil/air cooler when I finally get around to putting one into this car.

I stand corrected. I didn't begin to think there were road racers here on the board. I humbly appologize. . Now I beg the question.

Occording to test data I have concerning the use of oil by a popular outdoor equipment manufacturer.(actually the largest manufacturer of light commercial equipment in the US). They proved to us with test data that conventional motor oil begins to break down at 220 degrees farenheit. Notice I said BEGINS. They use and only allow Mobil1. They showed us, again with independent test data, that Mobil1 begins to break down at just over 450 degrees farenheit.

You may or may not have known that. So finally the question is, if you confirm that for yourself, why would you use anything else?

As far as your gage is concerned, the location of the sending unit could be in a few locations and I would think that each one will show a different temperature. So you would want to see the hottest one. Therefore, I think the hottest location would be back behind the intake where the oil pressure sending unit is located.
