Oil pump, pickup, spring for Canton 242T?
Oil pump, pickup, spring for Canton 242T?
Hi guys -
Need a little info. I'm putting together a 383 and have the Canton 242T pan. I'm trying to weed through the posts on which oil pump/pickup/spring to use and am just overwhelmed with differing opinions.
For those of you who have the 242T pan, what combo did you run? I'm looking at the Melling select 10554 pump. Which pickup/spring do I need?
Thanks!

I have the 10552 since my speed shop had that one in stock, its 10 percent more volume than stock and I have great oil pressure at all rpm. The canton pan fits pretty well, the only problem is I am running hooker shorty headers, and the y pipe will not clear this pan, we had to modify it to work. Also it hits the stock windage tray due to it having its own in the pan. I am not running the stock windage try or the crank scraper in the canton pan due to the long studs for the stock windage tray...i didn't want to put new main bolts in with 86k on my motor. I called canton for the pickup, and it bolts up to the mellings pump in one corner, and really nice piece, it is square and I had no problems putting the pan in the car with it. I think it was the 20-023 on their website, is the correct pickup, or the 20-013 should work fine. All of the melling select pumps have the 3/4 inlet, make sure if you call canton let them know that. I am also running the felpro one piece gasket with it, works great.
I am running the melling select 10% overdrive also. I used this in conjunction with the 20-023 press in pickup from canton. (I talked to Canton about the pickup)
It should be very close to the spec you need for pan/pickup clearance. (I wound up getting my pickup welded to pump) I also checked pan to pickup clearance with clay.
Another thing to watch out for with the pan is rod clearance on a 383. The scraper can contact rods after engine warms up due to expansion/rod type.
To be sure of proper clearance, I lined crank scraper with grease then installed on motor without oil pan gasket. After it was bolted up I manually rotated motor, then removed pan. I then used a dremel to clearance the scraper where things were contacting (obvious from marks in grease).
By the time you have dremeled and washed pan with soap, you can install with gasket.
Some have also had trouble installing oil dipstick in from pan contact. (another clearance area) This is something to keep in mind also.
