Ain't easy with the engine in the car. Just regular mechanic work.
Make sure your pickup is 1/2" or less from the pan bottom and keep it really clean.
If ya have to install the pickup make sure it goes on the end plate up to the swelled portion of the tube(about an inch) and level with the bottom of the pump(screen).

Also i know its gonna be hard, your gonna have to jack up the motor and such, but try and get the pickup tube welded, or get a screw in type. The one on my old motor that the previous owners put in, fell off.

It probably fell off 'cause it wasn't put in to the ridge on the tube. If ya put it to the ridge and it's streight it ain't going nowhere.Ya cain't even turn it.
Ya can get pumps with the pickup installed or they make a tool to install the pickup.
