oil pump drive gear removal

Does anyone know how I can remove the oil pump drive gear (gear that touches cam) from the shaft so I can replace it with a stronger one? I think msd makes a bronze gear. Does anyone know for sure or has replaced it? Mine keep shearing off every 6-10k miles cause of the melling hv pump. Thanks

Ryan

Re: oil pump drive gear removal

You have lost multiple gears? (Just making sure I understand it) I lost my first one at 200 miles although the gear had 90k miles. I think I'm going to replace it with a new one and see if it was a one time thing. My engine builder couldn't locate a brass one, so it's pretty much my only option. He said that it was an off diameter.

I'm curious to hear if you find anything though, and to hear what others have done.

yeah those factory gears on the oil pump drive shaft are crap. I found out that gm came out with a stronger one for when you install a billet/steel cam. part number 10456413 at gmpartsdirect.com $28 shipped It's supposed to be a lot stronger so we'll see

Re: oil pump drive gear removal

I found a bronze cam gear that will work. I ordered a new stock one and the upgaded one you posted. The one you posted has a different internal diameter than the stock one. Crower makes/stocks one that is the correct diameter. It isn't in the catalog though, you have to call and ask about it. Only found out about it because my builder was at Crower and brought the issue up.

I bought the last one they had on the shelf yesterday, but they can get more. Take a caliper and check the inner diameter, but I think it is .426 instead of .490 or .500. The gear we got fit perfectly and brass is what Gen 1 guys use on the distributor when they have similar problems.

Just something to try if your problem isn't fixed or persists.
