I've replaced it without removing the intake. Just takes some long arms and patience.. Also a a special socket helps, I think you can rent one from autozone.

Use the special oil pressure sensor socket. With an extension, aim from the brake booster toward the sensor, along the firewall.

Five minutes with the special socket. I think it is 1-1/16 Dia. and 2-3/4 deep. I think I got mine at AutoZone for like $6.When you find one ask to see the sending unit to make sure it fits. I went to one place and they said it would work but when I tried it, their socket was to short. Good luck......John

Is the special socket necessary? I'm going to be replacing this sensor next week, but I'll also be taking off my intake to fix an oil leak.

I tried it without the special socket, and couldn't. Any wrench big enough to get on the sensor had too little room to turn. I decided to remove the sensor as I pulled the motor so I'd have more clearance. But I broke it off in the process.

Save yourself some hassle and get the socket!

It is pretty much necessary. The sensor has rounded shoulders that do not allow a 12 pt socket to fit. A deep enough 6 pt socket might work.
