Oil pressure question

Is it normal for the oil pressure to flux at a STEADY high rate of speed (approx. 120 MPH & 2500 RPM)? Mine will flux about 15 PSI.

If it is not, does this necessitate a higher volume or pressure pump? What else can be done?

Thanks

The rule of thumb I go buy is 10psi for every 1000 rpm. HTH

10 psi for every 1500 rpm is fine...

Replace your sending unit first before you do anything else. The stock one is crap if it flucutates. 15psi at 2500 isn't good. Any good conditioned LT1 at 600 rpm idle gets at least that much.

Your oil pressure should not fluctuate at steady rpm. At 2500 rpm it should rock steady, vehicile speed should not effect it. May be bad sender or gauge. Check your oil level??

Oil level is good.

mebanditws6 - 15PSI is how much it was fluctuating. I think the pressre was about 65 or so and then it fluctuated about 15 PSI from there.

Any other ideas? I wouldnt think it is the sending unit because it is fairly new (about 10,000 miles) and this was the only time it fluctuates at a steady RPM. At any other time it doesnt fluctuated. Even at a steady 2500 RPM in slower speeds.

Thanks

Uh oh sounds like a sludge problem. Get some of this stuff www.auto-rx.com I just started a treatment of it in my Jeep. I think though if the motor is a high mileage motor it'd be a good idea to drop the pan and replace the oil pump as well. My Jeep did this, and sludge was the exact cause. The pan was cleaned as well as a new oil pump was put on, but I'm still running this rx stuff to clean out the top end of the engine. The direct cause is a clogged pickup screen, but the rest of the engine is probably pretty dirty as well and could use a couple rx treatments.

How the heck were you going 120 at only 2500 rpm's?

I am pretty sure it is not a sludge problem because I replaced the oil pan about 10K ago. It wasnt too bad when I pulled it ouff. I also ensured the pick-up was cleaned off before I put the pan back in. Now I wish I would have changed the pump also.

Ok, so I lied..........It is about 2550 RPM at 120MPH.

The reason is because I have a 93 that originally came with an M29 and 3.23's. I replaced the tranny with a brand new 94+ style with the .50 6th instead of the stock .62 6th. I have yet to get rid of the lowly 3.23's though. I do not even use 6th gear until 90 MPH. I wish I had the room and the cohones to top it out . When I go to the track I croos the line at the end of 3rd gear!

Hmmm well I guess you ought to hook up a mechanical guage to see exactly what the pressure is. Either way though I'd still recommend auto-rx cause at least the top part of the engine could might be a bit dirty. Plus it's great preventative maintenance. If the mechanical guage checks in with good results you just need to replace the sending unit again as it may have busted. If the mechanical guage reports fluctuations then the oil pump would be prime suspect.

You really need to get a different rear in there. To be in 3rd at the end of a race is just not right . I think 3.73's would do you fine. 4.10's might and do seem to work well with the 6spds, but first gear would be almost useless.
