Oil Pressure Gauge

Ok... motor is a 383. Eagle Crank, Eagle Rods, SRP Pistons, Clevite Bearings, LE3 Heads, LE3 Cam, LE Intake, etc... Just stating this fact so just you know what it's in it to see how much the oil pressure differs from stock.

When the car starts, it's at 60, if you happen to get on it before it's fully warmed. It shoots to about 70-75.

Once it's warmed up, it's usually pointing straight up (40psi). If you're at idle, it sits firmly at 20-25psi.

Today, for some reason, the gauge from to 0 at idle? But then it shot right back up and was doing it's usual thing. Then again, at idle... it drops back to 0 and the "Check Gauges" light comes on. The car runs fine as of now (It just happened). But what are the possibilities of it being a mechanical problem and the gauge not being correct?

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge

From the sound of it, it's probably the gauge. But I wouldn't drive it until you know for sure. It could be as simple as a loose wire to the pressure sensor, but better safe than sorry.

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge

Where could I find the wires to check it out? I'll run them all the way through and check connections.

http://shbox.com/1/oil_pressure_sensor.jpg This is where the pressure sensor is. I actually had the sensor disconnect itself once, and hopefully thats your problem as well. And not to sound like an idiot or anything, but you did check the oil level, right?

Yea... the level is good. It drops to 0, but it shoots right back up. It only happens at idle too... as soon as I goose the throttle, it's fine. I am going to check it tomorrow. Thanks!

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge

Excuse my ignorance but... can you have an oil leak from a bad sensor?

I had a pretty bad one on my old 65 falcon. I left the car running and came out to find the car just dumping oil on the ground. It ended up being the oil pressure sensor. It was just leaking right out one of the seams of it.
