Oil pressure drops at WOT

then goes back up when i let off gas. Gets down to about 20psi.

Engine was just rebuilt 355, forged with a high flow pump. 900 miles and no problems till now.

any ideas?

oil level is fine.

You mean a Melling HV oil pump... if you got one of these with the press fit pick up tube it probally fell off, unless you welded it on. i have also heard that a HV pump can suck the oil pan dry at high RPMs. Most people on this board don't even believe in using the HV pump cause it drags the motor down. Unless you built your motor with very loose tolerances to reduce friction, most likely a stocker is fine.

Re: Oil pressure drops at WOT

The best way to combat this seems to be a quality oil pan such as the Canton. Also, oil filter type seems to make a difference, many people will tell you to just stay away from the Fram. I tried one once, and the pressure drop under throttle was much worse than the Wix that I use now. You can get the Wix at a Napa under their name.

so is this bad for the engine or what?

yea i think its a mellion high flow pump. I do not know if he wleded it on or not, but what if he didnt and it fell off? could this be a problem and would i have to get it fixed or you think it could be the oil filter?

Re: Oil pressure drops at WOT

If the pickup fell off, you wouldnt have any oil pressure.

Im debating the stock pan vs canton, and stock pump vs high volume right now. I have no idea what Im gonna go with.

Do a quick search. Mine does it too. It is because of the g-forces when you are in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. The oil creaps up the back of the pan and then the oil pump gets less oil. The fix is a windage tray.

Re: Oil pressure drops at WOT

Are you guys using a mechanical oil pressure guage to check oil pressure? Reason I ask is cuz the stock oil pressure sending unit is a peice of crap making the guage inside the car pretty worthless.. When my car was stock with the stock oil pump the guage in the car would drop at WOT, sometimes all the way to zero and set off the "check gauges" light even though the pressure was actually fine.

Thats exactly why I diddnt go with a high volume pump on my forged 355 build. I used a Sealed Power unit, holds at over 50psi at 6200 rpms

Re: Oil pressure drops at WOT

Do you know if the windage tray is in there? Ive heard of people leaving out the tray on rebuilds and having similar symptoms.
