Oil Pressure dropped? Check gauges light

After me and my girlfriend were leaving Baltimore, we were driving it in the city and I floored it past this person doing like 15 MPH. When I got to the light my oil pressure was all the way at 0 and my check gauges light came on. A little freaked out, I put the car in neutral and it went back up. What could have caused this?

Could have sucked the pan dry (is it low at all on oil)?

check your oil level. Also could possibly be a faulty sending unit.

Did you brake very hard? sometimes that can cause oil to rush away from the pump for a moment. As mentioned above you can check the sending unit too.

Re: Oil Pressure dropped? Check gauges light

I just did an oil change like 700 miles ago, it's full of oil. How can/do I check the sending unit? I didn't brake THAT hard, or I don't think I did, it's happened to me a couple of times though.

If it happens often when you brake it also could be the pan pickup has fallen off. Drain the pan, knock on the bottom of it and see if you hear it rattle around.

What if I DO hear it rattling around? What would I need to replace?

I have experienced the same thing and asked about the oil pick up. Was told on this board that if my oil pick up fell off I would get no oil pressure,,, is this true?

If you do hear it rattling around, which it sounds like that might be your problem, you need to drop the oil pan. I suggest buying a bracket that bolts to the pump and holds the pickup tube on. I had this happen on my car and I ordered the bracket from JEGS. Some people have welded the pickup tube on but I would just buy the bracket. Good Luck!

You would have pressure until the oil level dropped below the pump, or in the lower rpm's. Without the pickup on, the pressure will drop as soon as the oil level drops below where the pump itself can pickup the oil without the tube on. When mine fell off, I had pressure until the rpm's started climbing above 3500, then the pressure would start to fall off pretty rapidly.

thanks for the reply,,, with mine (not trying to high jack but hoping to get answers and add to this thread) I can go up through the rpms medium to hard acceleration and no problem, but a hard stomp from a stop or slow roll and wham down to zero oil pressure. What could that be.

My normal pressure is 20 - 25 idles and 50 - 55 highway

Re: Oil Pressure dropped? Check gauges light

I drained the oil pan and I didn't have any rattling noises. Is the sending unit the wire attached to the oil pan right by the oil drain plug?

^^ My car does the same thing at times. Usually when I stomp on it as well.

Re: Oil Pressure dropped? Check gauges light

The sensor in the side of the pan is the low oil level sensor. The oil pressure sensor is on the side of the block, pass. side IIRC.
