Oil pressure drop during braking help please

Hey guys i just registered to the forum and i did a search with no concrete answer to my question. I just bought a 1996 Z28 it only has 21k miles on it and runs flawlessly, but when i brake harder and come to a stop it seems like the oil pick up is not getting oil. My pressure drops to zero and my check gauges light comes on. Did the pick up fall off the oil pump or is there a windage tray that normally prevents the oil from flying to the front of the engine? I've never seen the bottom end of an LT1 but I did own a 94 Formula which never gave me that problem. I know a few other people had the same problem on a different forum but they didn't have any answers to what caused it. Any help would be appreciated. Also how hard is it to get to the oil pump? If i do have to pull the pan should i just go with a deeper pan and high volume pump?

Hi, welcome to the forums. Sounds like you scored an awesome car - congrats!

Your oil pressure problem is a common one with the LT1. It's caused by the oil pickup tube falling off the oil pump. You'll need to drop the oil pan to have it brazed back on. You can do that by lifting the engine about 5 inches once you unbolt it from the mounts.

Have it fixed right away, and avoid driving the car like that.

Thanks dude... now at least i know what to do and not mess with other stuff first. Yea the car was a steal. Your red z28 looks really sharp too. I bought mine for $8500 with 21.5k miles. It has black leather, bose sound system, borla, k&n cai, and a nitrous. I haven't run the nitrous yet but i'll try it out on the track. The car is really mint. At first i thought it was hit and rebuilt but i had my body shop check the frame and everything and they said everything includign all the paint looks original. Once i upload some pics i'll put them in my signature. I plan on only doing bolt-ons to this car. I was actually going to start with the rear and tranny and then eventually build up the motor, take the nitrous off and put on a mild blower.

Sounds like you found a really clean car! Can't wait to see the pictures! My car had the oil pickup problem too - it's a PITA, but all in all, it's not a big deal.

I used to live in NY (now in FL), and my cousin lives in Woodside. How's good old Queens doing?

Queens is doing good. I'm not far from Woodside... its about a 10 minute drive from me. I'm in Ridgewood. I see a few Z28s and SLP SS's around but not too many. Too many people have been pulled into the import scene around here. It's pretty funny because they all talk crap about how fast they go and i keep hearing "my boy's honda does 9 second on the 1/4". Yea ok.. I went to import vs detriot muscle in englishtown and there were a few a nice imports running 12s and some in the 11s but they seemed to be running big turbos and just looked like they had lots of mods. I know a mechanic in Brooklyn that has a high 9 second second gen camaro. He put like $30k into the car and it does wheelies. I don't understand how everyone has a friend with a 9 second Civic but i've one on the track. Well anyway I'm just venting a little because I don't even bother to tell these people that they're full of crap.

Here is a picture of my car. That's not me inside that's the previous owner. The paint is flawless and the previous owner put the orange stripes on to give it the 30th anniversary look. It looks sharp though. Here is a link to the rims i'll get eventually. Rims on ebay

Nice man, very nice! I like the rims too.

I'm actually heading to New York next month, and I'll be hanging out in Woodside. We still have a house upstate too. My old girlfriend lives in Brooklyn, so I'll be cruising there too. I kinda miss that area.

good luck with the car man - it's sweet!
