Oil Preferences?
Oil Preferences?
I'm about to do the 2nd oil change since I got my Z28 last December.
I changed it shortly after I got it and belive I ran Mobil Clean 5000 5w30. (non synthetic)
The car has 130k on it, should I be running a thicker oil? Can I goto Mobil Clean 5000 synthetic blend?

Re: Oil Preferences?
And the mobil clean 5000 is non syntec, the 7500 is syntec blend and the 15000 is full syntec. No such thing as 5000 syntec. Numbers represent how long they advertise you could go without changing it.

A FEW of us have posted info in the past which would help you make an actual INFORMED decision. The vast majority of the answers you will get here including the ones you have already gotten are not based on any real knowledge, just the users blind faith in the companies marketting department.

Re: Oil Preferences?
He'll point out the negative in any post about oils. Thats just how it is on here.
On the flip side, he is right. The best oil you can run in a stock internal LT1 is GERMAN MADE Castrol Syntec 0W40 ... Must be german made though. Can be purchased at autozone I believe.
I run Mobil 1 in mine. I cant find Castol Syntec around here, and Mobil 1 IS a great oil. It just isnt as great as the 0W German Syntec. ...
Dont get to caught up on miles.
I know its not the most important thing, but as long as you at least 20 PSI at hot idle, your oil is plenty thick enough.

Re: Oil Preferences?
I am not the one to ask. I usually rebuild it as often as I change the oil
In my daily driver (2001 Silverado) I use Valvoline 5W-30 non-synthetic 'cause I can get it cheap. I have been using it in various vehicles for many years with no oil related issues. For my race car, I still have a big stack of cases of the original Kendall GT-1 20W-50. Best damn oil out there for a race engine, as far as I am concerned.
The one thing I will say about synthetic is that I see it used illogically. No point in using it if you are replacing it every 3,000 miles, IMHO. I change every 4-5,000 miles using non-synthetic in the DD. And as I said I have not had any abnormal wear issues with that methoid for YEARS. If I were paying the long buck for synthetic, I would be going to 7,500 mile changes or more.

Re: Oil Preferences?
I will say this simply and only based on opinion. But I have used Mobil1 10w30 since my car had 8000 miles on it. I look in my valve covers and I see that the heads appear to have no burnt oil on top of them. I am interested in seeing what the engine looks like when I have to tear it apart. It now has 100k on it. When I first got it, it had six miles on it.
Also of interest, at my first synthetic oil change, I put four quarts of Mobil1 and 1 quart of Slick 50. I burned three quarts of oil in the next 3000 miles and it finally stopped. I guess the slick 50 kept the rings from seating.
Good Luck, Shimaze
PS> I have heard to stay as far away from Quaker Shake as far as possible
