I just ordered a high volume melling pump today, and I'm going to run the stock pan with it. There are a bunch of people on here that say a high volume pump is a bad idea, and there are a bunch of people on here who say that it's perfectly fine. However, no one was able to come up with solid proof that running a high volume pump caused any damage to their motor.

Could you explain why a high volume pump is a waste of time?? My thirdgen with a 305 that was beaten to hell and back still held more oil pressure than my LT1 does. I know the LT1 is in good shape too, so a worn out motor is not the problem. I do understand that high volume is not the same as high pressure, but at idle I think the pressure on my LT1 is dangerously low, and a lot of others have reported the same thing.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just wondering how you came to that conclusion.

I think this happens to total idiots(3qts in motor @6800rpms maybe). I have had my HV pump for 6 months and several 6800rpm spins. I never have had proof in my motor, or from this board of anyone sucking their pan dry either. I run a extra qt over fill line, and a bigger filter. More lube is a good thing. Dont try to say passage ways cant take it either, we put HV pump in every engine we have rebuilt..

Nice, well I'll be doing the high volume pump regardless of what anyone says now, it's on the way

Just wondering, did you see an increase in oil pressure with the high volume pump?? I'm all for running a bigger filter in the car, I usually do anyway. Would an extra half a quart be sufficient over the full line??

I like to see alittle more info on this. Some HARD CORE facts of why it can't be done and just run alittle extra oil in the pan. I have a HV pump and stock pan.....I was about to spend 289 bones before I saw this... Anyone wanna save me some money?

I once asked a friend who was a professional engine builder about this. His reply was;

The stock pump supplies more than atiquite oilflow for a stock engine, If you raise your rpm range to anything short of 8k just de-burr your oil drainback holes in your block and heads and polish your intake valley, and mabye get a deeper pan. High volume oil pumps are for motors with fully groved main bearings. These motors require alot more Oil volume to keep the crank completely suspended on fluid. On a street motor you are just costing your self 5 or so horsepower for no benefit.

I'm just concerned about the low oil pressure I'm getting at idle, and have always gotten with this car. So if the oil pressure is low, then I'm gonna send some more oil to it!!

Anyways, I guess to accurately find out if an oil pump is needed, we need to know factory bearing clearances, compare them with other small blocks, find out the ratings on the LT1 oil pump and compare them with others........
