Yes... infact, thats how your supposed to do it. You dont need to pull the timing cover to do the oil pan. you are supposed to pull the oil pan to do the timing cover removal tho. (but you can be careful and get the cover off without crackin the oil pan loose)

Re: oil pan gasket replacement w/o removing timing cover

Ok, with all that said, is it possible I could of damaged anything more?

Don't think im gonna be able to get this done this weekend, so monday i'm gonna have it towed in and fixed for me. The jack slipped right behind the k-member plate under the motor and crushed t hat area of the pan. The rear area of the pan is fine (where the plug is, and I hope where the oil pickup is). I'm hoping it didnt hit the crank or anything like that. I didn't try starting the car, but i'm thinking of pulling a couple of plugs and tring to turn the hub by hand and see if it moves easy or if there is any cool metal on metal contact. Any info will be helpful. Damn $300 oil change.

The oil pan is pretty beefy so it would cushion the blow to any internal parts. The crank is also a stout piece so I think you'll be OK.

Just drop the pan down, i wanted to be stubborn too, got the cover off w/o dropping the pan, but then i couldnt get it back in, so i had to drop the pan anyways.

Very Very Carefully... I obviously took everything off that I could. Then started to pry the cover back, once it was off the dowl pins I used a razorblade/pick combo to hold the oil pan gasket down and pry it off the timing cover. Then to install it, also carefully as to make sure the seal doesn't slide out of place, and I used some RTV in the corners to make sure there would be no leaks. Also, cleaned off the timing cover groove and used a razor to make sure there wouldnt be any problems with the oil pan gaskets old rtv.

The other thing is, you have to be careful of the water pump and crankshaft seals, don't want to damage them.

All in all though, i would said next time I will be breaking the pan loose instead... it probably would take the same amount of time. I know you can cut a 1 pc oil pan gasket to install it without pulling the oilpan completely.

Sorta shadetree...
