Oil Pan Gasket Replacement -- With Tranni Out?

I removed my tranni yesterday due to a clutch failure, and figure now is a good time to replace the oil pan gasket while I wait for the new clutch parts to arrive.

My question is, with the tranni removed, can I get the oil pan out without jacking the motor up? If not, where can I place a jack to lift the motor with the tranni out? I don't see a convienient place to jack the motor up.

Thomas.

With the tranny out you'd have to lift the engine with a hoist. Another option would be to disconnect the steering shaft from the rack and pinion. Loosen the 6 subframe bolts about 2 to 2 1/2 inches. They are fairly long and will let the cross member drop enough to remove the pan. Or clean the exterior of the pan and drop the pan as far as it goes then slip the gasket around the outside of the pan.

If I loosen the K-member, won't the motor drop down with it? Even if I took the motor mount bolts out, I can't see how the motor would stay put when lowering the K-member 2"?

I might try what you suggested ...... putting the new gasket on without completely removing the pan. I was just hoping I could get the pan completely out so I could clean it up properly.

I am also getting ready to do the timing cover gaskets. Do you think I should get the pan bolted back up before doing those, or should I do the timing cover 1st, then bolt the pan back into place?

Thanks for your input,
Thomas.

You're right. I confused myself. If the tranny was in and the motor mounts disconnected and you held up the front of the motor, then you could get a couple of inches by lowering the cross-member.

If you are doing both I'd do the front cover then the oil pan.

Your best bet.
