oil pan gasket

I was wondering what kind of problems you all had when you replaced the oil pan gasket. Do you guy's think I should replace the oil pump while I am there? Note there is nothing wrong with the one I have now. If changed it will be at the same time as removing the tranny to have a leak fixed, putting on pacesetters long tubes and replacing the opti and timing cover gasket. How high did you have to lift the motor to pull the pan out? Thanks in advance.

Re: oil pan gasket

I dropped the K member and held the engine in place with an engine hoist to replace my friend's oil pan gasket. No special tricks needed. The Felpro oil pan gasket is nicer than the stock GM piece. No need to replace the oil pump. Check the oil pick-up to make sure it's securely attached; they've been known to fall off. It would be a bad idea to have it brazed on.

Re: oil pan gasket

You dont need to jack up the engine or drop the k member. When I did mine I read up and found that it can be done much simpler. All you have to do is drop the oil pan, take off the oil level sensor, clean the oil pan as best you can while its still basically stuck there, then slide a new gasket around the outside of the pan and into place. This worked well for me. Make sure to use some rtv sealant where it ties into the timing chain cover and on the back of the oil pan.
