oil pan gasket
oil pan gasket
i am changing the oil pan gasket on my 94 and am wondering if there are any things that would be helpful to know before doing it. and im also wondering if i need to put silicone on the gasket before putting it back on. thanks Joe
The Fel-Pro gasket that I got said to be installed dry...also you want to make sure and clean the block and pan mating surfaces before re-installing. And put a good bead of RTV on the rear seal and timing cover seal. I also went around the outside of those seal areas just for extra precaution. If you are gonna just drop the pan and work the gasket over the pan, you may want to put a towel or something over the k-member to keep the gasket as clean as possible. These are things you may already have known, but if you are like me, I want people to tell everything when I am about to do any job.
I just dropped the oil pan down about an inch and a half. Then I pulled the old gasket out ( it came out clean and I didn't have to do any scraping
) then slid the new fel-pro iinto the pan so that I could bring it out the other side. Thats how I got mine into place. With no cutting too. Hope that helps

Another thing i was wondering is if you can get all the bolts out without removing anythig. Or do i have to take a few things off to get to all of the bolts. Some of them looked to be in tricky spots. I think i am also going to do the tranny pan gasket cause its leaking to. that looks to be a pretty easy one to do.
I think I had to remove my starter to get to one or two of the bolts...if you just drop the pan about an inch like TUFF LT1 said, it won't take you 30 -45 minutes to change it out. Be sure to get all of the oil off of the block and the pan because like I said the gasket goes on dry. It wasn't near as hard as I thought it was gonna be.
