Oil level sensor wont back out

My stock oil level sending unit threaded into the oil pan has been leaking for at least a year. Little by little, sure, but it's enough to blow back onto my tranny, exhaust, and floorpans to make a mess when time comes to crawl under. The oil is actually leaking through the wiring connector housing - bizzare I know. So I bought a used one here on CZ28 and went to take mine out...it unthreads fully but only comes out 3/4" before it catches on something inside the pan! What the heck?? I know this can't require me to drop the crossmember and oil pan just to change the sensor. Even a brisk *tug* resulted in no movement.

What could possibly be getting snagged on the far end of the level sensor? An elephant??

Mine recently started to leak through the wires as well and I was thinking of changing it also. I thought because I'm using synthetic.
Let's see if anyone knows anything about it.
So, heres to the top for ya.

My 96 Z28 has been doing the same thing since I've owned the car. At first I thought it was sloshing out of the back of the intake(another very common lt1 problem), but it seems to be the oil sensor instead........ hope we can find out!

Does the wire disconnect off this sensor?

Cool

The wire does disconnect, but it's a PITA... Whats getting caught is the portion of the sending unit that moves up and down, it's like a sleeve and when it falls down, it's makes contact with the rest of the sender and throws the Low Oil light on. Just work with it a bit, try angling it a little

I think I'm going to RTV it this weekend and call it a day. Eventually I'll get a new one (since the used one i bought was broken upon removal)...

They tend to catch on the oil pickup tube. just angle it a little different it will come out.
