Oil Level?.. 5Qts Shows Way Overfull??

Alldata says to put 5 qt in when changing filter. I put 5 qts in and it the stick says its about an inch over the full line. I have ran the engine to fill the filter. This reading was taken after I let the oil drip down over night, but thats when it should be perfect.

Its a stock pan. Only modification is a few small spots I had to beat on to clearence it for the longer stroke. I am using a diffrent dip stick. My car didnt have one when I bought it, so I purchased one used from someone on here. I think it was from a TA and im using it on a Z28. I bet thats the problem. Are they diffrent legnth?.. I am still using the Z28 tube. can some one give me a measurment of the tube and the stick?..

Thanks

I bet you have the wrong dip-stick (too long). 1/2 quart would not be an inch on the dip-stick.

Mine takes 6 qts. with the M1-302 filter to bring it to the full mark.

check the pan for dents...maybe someone 'missed' the frame when jacking the front up...and while you're at it, check the exhaust too...it's right there as well.

there is a few little dents, but when I clearenced the pan for the longer stroker I just took a big deadblow and bowed the whole area out. that should have made it be able to hold more. maybe not by much.. but it would make up for any small dents. I think its just the wrong dipstick. I will do an oil change and see how much it takes to get it to full. if its under 4.5qts then I know its wrong.

wow.. thats sad. a big V8 taking less oil that a BMW inline 6.. by almost half..

anyway. I put 4 qts and started the engnie and it was still over by about 1.4 inch..

I am having a little leakage from between the block and bell housing. telling me that is the rear main, or one of the gally plugs. since the plugs and threaded and I put thread sealer on them I dont think its that. I guess it could be the large plug for the cam.. but still unlikly.. I think its the rear main. I have inspected closly and its not coming from the valve covers or heads at all, the back of the block is clean. I was thinking if its overfilled it could come out the rear main maybe, its not ment to hold oil like a waterfall, its never submirged in oil unless is way overful. but I put 4 in and it still leaked so its not that. I may just have to remove the tranny AgAiN.. and see where its coming from..

I would definatly like to get this whole oil thing figured out. Did we decided if the TA and camaro stick or tube are the same>?.

dip stick and tube is motor/oil pan specific, not model specific

There are reasons for that. Those engines have many many more oil passages and moving parts than your standard SBC. The V6 in the new Camaro requires over 7 quarts...
