Oil leak (Question about water pump)
Oil leak (Question about water pump)
Hey everyone,
I have a 93 LT1 and i just started to get an oil leak that's now dripping onto the belt and driving me crazy.
After spraying her down i'm almost positive that its leaking out of the front plate of my water pump which is dripping downward.
I do not think that it is the rear seal but only the front.
I am not too familiar with the water pumps with shafts but was wandering if i were to remove this front plate, will the antifreeze drain out or can i reseal this plate without having to deal with flushing my coolant?
Also concerned if the water pump is still good. I was told the weep hole leaking means the pump is done, but i am unsure since it is oil coming out.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Oil leak (Question about water pump)
Mark, there is no oil behind that front plate, just the pump impellor, which is immersed in coolant. Oil is isolated from the pump by the shaft with seals. If oil is dripping from the pump, it is coming from the oil seal in the timing cover and wicking its' way down to the bottom. Even if the seal fails at the back of the pump it won't get oil inside.
To actually answer your question, you cam remove the pump cover and reseal it afterward. You will lose significant coolant and will have to refill and bleed air from the system.

Re: Oil leak (Question about water pump)
Make sure your PCV valve is working properly. Mine got a kinked hose and was forcing oil out that seal, making me think the seal was bad. Fixed the PCV valve hose and everything is back to normal.
Re: Oil leak (Question about water pump)
They're not related. The opil pressure sensor is located above the oil filter on the side of the block on '93 cars. It does nothing but sense oil pressure...all it can do is work or not..it can't cause leaks somewhere else on the engine...
