Oil Leak? Possible Rear Main I believe!

I have an oil leak, I haven't done the blacklight test yet, but the oil is leaking off the bellhousing of the tranny, So automatically the rear main came to mind. Anyone have a guide to fix the rear main, or replace it? Or any pictures or anyone could start me on the walk through process?

I am wanting to fix the oil leak, because I'm dropping the tranny out to send off to T-56Rebuilds.com this week, and figured I'd fix this minor issue while I had the tranny out of the car.

Thanks in advance,
D. Adkins

Could be manifold back side leaking. Very common on these.

Well I'm getting ready to drop the tranny out this upcoming week with my father in law, so I guess while we are at it I'll check out the rear main, and the back in the Intake Manifold. Guess I might as well do the 20$ blacklight UV test just to make sure. I'm wanting this car to be in tip top shape for Spring ..... So I'm rebuilding the tranny, and fixing ALL oil leaks if possible......

Might replace all the gaskets as well.....

Thanks,
D. Adkins

How do you do this test?

Thanks for the answer, Before I drop my tranny out I think I'm going to do the UV Dye test. If it is the rear main leaking, wouldn't it leak even while the car is not on? So Could I do the blacklight test while the transmission is even off the car?

Thanks,
D. Adkins

Just to mention, the leak isn't really really bad, it's just there...... I think that's why it's something small like the rear main, and it's draining down onto the bellhousing of my transmission. A buddy of mine said "REAR MAIN" as soon as I described my leak. He said he's about 95% sure that's what would be causing my leak. Guess I won't know until I blacklight test it.

Thanks,
Dax

The rear intake oil leak is a well-known problem with the LT1s. Seeing that you are dropping the tranny though anyhow, whether it is the intake or rear main, it shouldn't be that difficult of a fix.

If it's on the draining off the *top* of the bellhousing, I don't see how it could be the rear main, seeing as the rear main is contained within the bellhousing area. More than likely the intake manifold is leaking.
