Oil leak from Opti?????
Oil leak from Opti?????
Hey guys.....like everyone knows, got my stroker in about 2 weeks ago. I recently found an oil leak from my timing chain cover. Can't exactly locate the leak but it looks like its coming from behind the Opti. Anyone have this problem?? Or where else could it be leaking from???
if its a 96-97 Lt1, then yeah possibly the seal behind the opti is bad and leakin. no big deal, just have to pull the opti off and im sure you can change out the seal without taking the timing cover off.
this is very common. its the seal but not the seal that is leaking but where the seal is pressed in is where the leak is. yes what i just said suxs. all aftermarket opti seals do this and i bet you put in a new seal like rest of us and me for insurence. take the seal out and simply use rtv around the edges when you put it back in. then put some over the edge once it is installed and BAMM! no leak.

The most common leak point on the timing cover is the waterpump drive shaft seal. Nine times out of ten that seal gets rolled when installing the timing cover. I always take extreme care with that seal. If it leaks it will run down the front of the cover exiting below the opti.
If you have an electric waterpump this becomes a non-issue of course and installing the timing cover becomes much, much easier.

yeah it sucks
just suck it up and pull the timing cover off and put a gasket set on it. change all the seals and the gasket on the cover so you can forget about it. a couple of bucks...........just get ur hands dirty.

heh, I put my motor back together and have the exact same problem. I really don't feel like messing with it, so my car leaks oil now, and will continue to do so until I fix it(whenever that may be)

I just wanna know because if its the Opti seal, I'm sure I can do it without pulling the cover...which means I don't have to drop the pan. Anyone else???????
