Oil leak....need some advice....

I change me pil the other day just like I always do(1994 Z28) and I didnt nothing different or anything of that nature. Well crank the car, turned it off and checked the oil. It was right on were is should be. So I start driving the car and I smell burning oil about 10 miles down the road. Well I was like what could that be, so I go back home and look and there is oil all over the exhaust, mainly the y pipe area. I was like well heck I gotta leak, I have always had a small leak from the oil pan like all f bodys but, I got under it and looked and I saw some oil on the back plug wire and some on the back side of the valve cover gasket and I figured that was the prob. Well put a new valve cover gasket it on it, and cranked it, it ran fan burnt all the oil off the exhaust and I was like well problem solved. So I took it down the road and it I still had the burning smell and it seemed worse, I was like dang. Turned back and went home oil is leaking worse that it was, and its on the exhaust. But I let it idle for 20 mins, no leaking at all. Go run it down the road, blows it out all over the exhaust. Its got a small stream coming down from the starter and dripping on the y pipe. I thought it could be blowing out of the back side of the intake? But Im really not sure and Im stumped!!! What are yalls takes on it???

Thanks

if it got worse after you changed the valve cover gasket, then that is probably still your issue. the gaskets can sometimes slip out of the groove and not seal properly

Are you sure that you removed the old filter gasket before installing the new filter? Just a thought.

id say the valve cover is still leaking. its probably only bad when you drive it becasue of crank case pressure blowing it out. might also want to change your pcv valve too while you at it.

I was thinking the same thing...Its very easy to have the old oil filter gasket come off the old filter and get stuck to the block...The new oil filter will go back on over the old seal and cause a big leak...Check your old filter to make sure it still has the gasket on it...

check the oil pressure switch. they leak worse while driving because of the higher pressure and because the connector is on it can spray like a gun. just my thoughts

oil filter would not drip down on the starter tho....
go to and auto parts store and get you some oil dye, put a black light bulb in your drop light and look at it in the dark, should find it pretty quick...

The oil filter is on the other side of the pan, not where the exhaust runs down. Plus usually if you leave that old gasket it out, the new filter will spin right off. The gasket was in there good, I just thought it was my gasket at first cause I found a little oil on the pack of the valve cover(when I got back from driving it there was no oil from the back side of the valve cover noted), Im thinking it was a small leak that was un noticed till I just ran across it. I think all the oil is coming from somewhere else, whatever it is that is leaking is causing a mess. I heard about checking the oil pressure switch, just havent. Any other ideas.

Also isn't that oil pressure sensor on the back side of the intake?

Ok....it's probably not the oil filter, but----one needs to analyze the situation in a logical way. I.e, if you didn't have the problem til you did something, then it is logical to assume that what you did caused the problem----at least this is a good place to start.

As far as oil from a filter not leaking on a particular part of the engine----it doesn't make any difference where the oil is leaking from since oil can be blown anywhere on the engine from the fan and movement of the vehicle.

So one needs to start with the obvious and using the process of elimination isolate the cause.

Having said this about that, it would be helpful for the everyone to provide a factual response to our suggestions based on the reasonable explanation of why the suggested cause is invalid.

Along with that, it is always appreciated when the poster lets everyone know what the cause was and how it was resolved. JMHO

And its noted that isn't coming from the oil filter unless it was relocated on the top side of the engine, cause its coming from the tops side and on to the starter and on to the exhaust, its no blowing from anywhere just dripping down.

i had a very similar oil leak on mine it took forever to track it down
first i did the valve covers then the oil pressure sender but to no avail
it ended up being oil leaking out the back of the engine where the intake meats the block
this is a known problem with these enigines not a fun one to fix but not to bad either
just yank the intake off
but a FAT bead of silicone down on the back and front of the block where the intake sits replace gaskets put intake back on
granted its a bit more involved than that but you get the picture
that is exactly how mine was leaking an not a bad place to look in your case
but on a side not the vavle cover gaskets can be a pain to get on properly
i would probably check those clean em off and make sure you heve em on properly

I will look at the gaskets again, but I haven't noticed any signs of leaking around them. Funny think its I get no oil on the headers, just directly on one spot right below where the exhaust is under the starter. Did you noticed oil on the back side of the intake. I ran a rag across the backside of mine along with my hand, and no signs of oil leakage.

Thanks
