Angry oil leak!!!!!

hello everyone, I have a oil leak behind my hub , and I'm just trying to find out, if I have to take the balancer bolts out, or can I just take the middle hub bolt out, and if there is anything I need to watch out for when I do this. Someone please help me out on this. Trying to get it fixed today. Thanks

Re: oil leak!!!!!

Use a 3 legged puller to get the balancer off.

Re: oil leak!!!!!

Before you go to all that trouble, why don't you try some high milage oil. It includes a little extra swelling agent to make the seals tighten up. You could also add Lucas oil treatment to conventional oil, it also has the swelling agent.

Just a thought.

Re: oil leak!!!!!

ok, I'm going to be taking my hub off today, to fix my leak, but I need to make sure I use this puller correct. I picked up a harm balancer puller from auto zone. If I'm correct I need to connect the puller to the 3 bolt holes of the hub, and then start cranking the middle bolt to force the hub off. To make sure this is all I have to do, I have taken the balancer off, and taken the middle hub bolt off, do I need to do anything else, before I try to take this hub off??

I don't see how that'll work... the pulley puller i have has little legs that hook to the outside of the pulley and then you force it off with the center screw. I don't get how it'll work if you put it in the bolt holes... seems like you'll just be securing it more that way... maybe i'm just clueless..

Re: oil leak!!!!!

the middle bolt of the puller, has a spear shape piece on the end, and when I screw on it, it pushes on the crank, and will put pressure on the 3 bolts screwed into the hub. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Can someone tell me if I'm doing this wrong???

yeah, thats wrong, you need a bolt or something in the crank to push on , see here http://shbox.com/1/hub.jpg

Cool Re: oil leak!!!!!

To pull the damp. and hub. You gotta take the 3 bolts off the damp. and pry it off, its just 'pressed' onto the hub, similar to a brake rotor. Two pry bars, one on each side of the pulley usually wiggles it off the hub. once that is off youve got to pull the center bolt out from the crank, then you need to stick a thinner longer bolt that fits into where the center bolt goes (or just partially thread the orginal bolt back in... but you can screw the threads up if the hub is stuck nicely), and then you attach the puller with the three bolts, and crank it. if you just pull the center bolt and attach the puller and crank, youll bend the hub. The hub slides over the crank snout, and actually covers the front of the snount, and only has a hole large enough for the bolt.

Heres a link to a decent walkthrough. http://www.go-fast.org/z28/damper.html

EDIT: also, your oil leak may be coming from the water pump drive or opti drive as well, which are above the crank seal... I had to take care of all three, which involves taking the timing cover off to do it right IMO.
