Oil filter relocation question

Oil filter relocation question
So I got a steal on a 1996 Z28 last week. 125k miles, M6, Hooker catback, great shape for a 16 year old car. I don't think the Ford dealer knew what they had. Anyways, changed the oil for the first time yesterday. Figured it wouldn't be an easy task judging by how tight everything is in the engine bay and the fact that you can buy an oil filter relocation kit. I researched it on here and someone said it was tight but doable. So I crawled under her and much to my surprise it was the easiest oil change I've ever done. The engineers at GM were thinking when they designed the filter placement. It's easy to get at and it's straight up an down so no mess, which was nice. So that leaves the question: what is the purpose of an oil filter relocation kit? Is it just to get the filter further away from the heat radiating off the cat?
