The oil cooler is a sandwhich type cooler which is is between the oil filter and the block. It sticks down about 2.5 inches and has two aluminum lines running to it. These lines run along the oil pan and one connects to the water pump and one connects to the radiator. Its basically a small radiator and the water from the engine flows through it and the oil flow around the outside of the fins. The only reason they put it on some cars was to ward off high under hood temps. I don't remember what actually deteremined which cars got it. But I think Z rated tires was a factor.

It's not known to be an effective cooler (compared to other types) and also prone to problems that can lead to coolant contaminaion of the oil. A lot of people that have had them, have removed them. Would I put one like that on my car? No.

Just to look at the other side of things, I went to a lot of trouble to find an oil cooler for my car and I'm happy with it. That being said, I don't use it in competition and it gets really hot here in the summer. If I raced my car, I wouldn't be using an oil cooler or a paper filter.

I'm really not sure how the stock oil cooler got such a bad rap. The one on my Formula has a sticker indicating it is made by Moroso. Never had a problem with it in the first 65K miles of operation, it was in good shape and clean when we pulled the engine for the stroker build, and the shop that built my engine had no issues with reusing it.
