Odd opti question
Odd opti question
Okay so i have a 96 camaro that the motor blew in so i decided to buy a lower mileage 94 motor and drop it in. I left much of the same accessories from the 94 on the motor as they were lower mileage than the 96. I also didn't want to break seals or anything so i left most of that alone too. In doing so i left the non-vented 94 opti on the car. I switched the small harness and everything plugged in fine. I also left the ICM, and most every sensor from the 94 on the motor too.
Now my question. Im trying to start it and it seems to be out of time, will the OBD II computer run the old style opti?? I know you can upgrade the OBD I engines to the new style opti so i figured i wouldn't have a problem... anyone know??
Im told that the OBD II computer doesn't need the cranshaft position sensor in order to run but just to detect misfires with. Is this correct also??

Re: Odd opti question
Okay so i just figured out its not a mis-fire but the injectors are just NOT firing? I wonder if the updated opti is needed for the OBD II computer or if the CPS is needed to fire the injectors?
Re: Odd opti question
Should work. Don't need the CKP sensor for anything other than misfire detection.
If the injectors aren't firing, it might be a problem with the low res pulse pattern from the Opti.... possibly a bent or corroded pin in the wiring harness. You might have a problem with interfacing your 94 Opti harness extension with the gray connector from your 97 harness, but I wouldn't think so. The pulse pattern is the same whether its a vented or unvented Opti. Only the details of the case changed, and the harness connector. Not the optical sensor.

Re: Odd opti question
Thanks for the response fred. Ive done a little more investigating, pulled the fuel rail stuck a piece of paper under all 8 injectors and found that all of them are producing absolutely nothing. Ive pulled all 8 injectors harness and found that by placing a park light in them that all 8 are getting an injector pulse from the computer. My only assumption is that fuel pressure is too low to fire. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge handy right now....
Its still very odd to me as the fuel pump, fuel rails, lines, fuel pressure regulator are all the exact same ones i was using. The only thing changed is the injectors. I cant imagine they are all dead tho???
