Yep... auto zone worked, but when he plugged the little thing in the port the shift light went off and the fans came on and the ac comp jumped a little. The guy got all confused. A person inside told me that it needed to have a running diagonistic done at a dealership. How much is that?

You say "worked", but did it? Get any codes? What did they plug into the DLC? Why would they turn around and tell you to go to the dealership?
The local auto zone could scan my 94 but they told me that since the ses light only came on after about 2 minutes of driving that i had to take it to a dealership to get a running test. At auto zone the guy plugged a little piece of metal into the port to make a connection that he said would make the ses light blink giving him the code and it did not work. The person inside said that since it only came on when i was driving that i had to go to a dealership to get the proper scan.
You will need a scan tool or code reader that works with OBDI to pull the code. If you buy either of those, be sure it will do what you want, as not all tools will do it. You can not short the pins after '93.
There are hand held units, such as those by Actron and Autoxray, and there are programs made to work with laptops and desktops. It depends on how much money you can afford to spend. Check E-bay for "OBDI scan tools" for starters. Or do a search for the same thing. Injuneer Fred has a good write up on them, if you can find it. I think there is a group purchase on the Scan Master for around $225.
