O2 sensor problem

Hey, I just got some new O2 sensors and I realized that they are the factory length and I have headers so I have the O2 extensions. My shop finished the work for me including the old O2's so I don't know how I can make it work because they both have four wires but the new ones are 2 white, then black and gray, but the old wires are two brown, then purple and tan. So I don't know what to connect together. I can post pics if needed, but I just don't know what to do.

Re: O2 sensor problem

I dunno, but let me see if I get the picture:

You have (2) 02 sensors 1 pre cat and 1 post cat. The sensors have 4 wires indicating that they are heated type.

Do the 02s have pigtails that merely adjoin the wire harness (female to male plugs--4 wires to 4 wires?

Do the plugs only fit one way, so that your new 02s just plug into the wire harness? If so, then we are good to go so far.

Now do your extenders have pigtails on each end (male and female? IF so then I would think that you merely plug the Male end of the extender into the female end (wire harness or 02--whichever) and the plug the remaining ends together.

If your 02s and wire harness and extenders don't plug into one another....well I don't know.JMHO

Re: O2 sensor problem

Your old 02 probably had the sensor end wires connected to the PCM harness thusly: Sensor end brown to blackwire (engine ground).
Sensor end brown to brown (12 volt source)---i.e the 2 brown wires are for heating element of the 02.

Now your purple wire would have gone to your purple/wht wire, and tan wire would have connected to the tan/wht wire.

So now we need to determine which of wires of the new 02s. two whites and the gray and black wires represent the heating element and the sensor itself.

Off hand I would guess that the 2 white wires go to the sensor 1 to the tan/wht wire and the other to the purple/wht wire----and the black wire to the black wire and the gray wire to the brown wire.

Hell, I don't know.

Re: O2 sensor problem

Heres what it looks like in a little more detail...

Current setup is the sensor itself screwed into the header. The wires are about 2 feet in length, leading up to only one harness. I can plug the new O2's into the harness but the wires are far too short to reach the opening in headers because I bought stock size O2's without looking at the setup beforehand (bad on my part). So now I'm stuck with 2 brand O2's that are too short to connect. And I was thinking, cut the wires and reconnect them with the new ones, but I have no idea what wires would connect.

I was originally thinking that since there are two white wires on each new one, then I should connect the two old tan ones to them. But they are all flat color wires with no stripes.

So I'm a little lost. But thanks for helping me out here so far.

Re: O2 sensor problem

Good idea. Can I get them at a parts store? I have a Pep Boys and Advance Auto in my area. Autozone is a little farther out. Why didn't I think of that?
