A note about my Powerbond/Pioneer balancer/hub: I needed a key.
A note about my Powerbond/Pioneer balancer/hub: I needed a key.
I know you don't NEED one per se on the LT1, but I did end up needing one.
In my Scat 9000 crank, there are 2 keyways on the front. The rearward keyway has a key in it that the timing chain gear went over. I don't know if it was necessary to put in there or not, but it was in there. Actually, yes I believe it's required, or else the crank gear might spin. It comes forward of the gear about maybe 1/8" or so, maybe a little more.
The new hub has also got a keyway in it. So, unless you have perfect skills to back puppy all the way to the back and seat it against the timing gear, you need to put a key in the front keyway to line up the hub so it slides straight back.
I ended up getting a 3/16" key, then filing down the width just a little bit, as I couldn't find one that fit perfectly. Didn't take a whole lot of filing, just a little.
Come to think of it, is that hub supposed to rest on that gear? I believe the 97's require use of a "short" hub, I don't know how exactly that works...I know I ordered the right one, not sure if I got the right one, didn't have the part #'s to check.
Here's the crank with the key as you can see:

Here's the hub:

I'll check the part # when I get there today. But, judging by the measurement from the crank gear to the tip of the crank snout, and the depth of the hub, the hub is going to bottom out on that crank gear. Is that right?

Re: A note about my Powerbond/Pioneer balancer/hub: I needed a key.
The part # I ordered was FHXS1481SS, I'll have to check to make sure I recieved the right one. Now, I also need to now go and probably order the bolt/washer from GM, as I'm using the ARP bolt. The washer that comes with is not the correct one, so I got 4 grade 8 washers and stacked them to that thickness...It SHOULD be right, but I'm not for sure. I suppose I could take the bolt out, see if it's 2 1/4", blah, I'm aggravated and can't think right now LOL.
