Not sure about my antifreeze...

hey,

I have a '95 Z28 A4 and the light is on right below the redline on the tach....i think its saying that the antifreeze is low....or cud it b something else. if its the antifreeze, which i think it is...what color antifreeze do i need to get to top it off? its dark out so i cant look or nething to see what color it is. any help would b appreciated.

thanx in advance,
jake

dex cool is for newer cars that require it.

Make sure to do a mix of coolant and water, and make sure to bleed the air out of the lines, or you will have problems... also check for leaks/burning coolant out of exhaust (white smoke, sign of bad head gasket) and also make sure it is even low, ive heard that the sensors go bad quite often..
ive been running dexcool for about 2 years now, no probs ( 95 as well)

Dexcool coolant is normally reddish in color. Regular coolant is usually green in color. If your car is currently running the green coolant, it is not recommended that you switch to the Dexcool. Dexcool was used on some 95's, and I think that everything after 95 had the Dexcool. The truth is, it doesn't matter which one you have AS LONG AS you do NOT mix them. If you mix them, they will form a sludge that will clog up your coolant system. Therefore, you should probably stay with the coolant that you have, unless you FULLY flush the system out before using a different kind. Also, if your car came from the factory with Dexcool, normally they will put a sticker in the engine comparment (usually on the front brace over the radiator) that says that the car uses Dexcool. Could be on the antifreeze overflow bottle cap too.

The light right below the redline on the tach is the low coolant light (I think). If I remember right, it is. And yes, these sensors are prone to malfunction. My sensor is messed up too right now. Check your coolant level. If it is fine, then more than likely the sensor is shot. If you are drinking up coolant (refilling and the level keeps going down), you probably have another problem to address (coolant leak, bad head gasket, etc.). More than likely you are just looking at a bad sensor.

Even if you flush the coolant system and put in new antifreeze, the sensor will still not work properly. Mine didn't.

ok, i went out and checked, the level seems fine. so i looked under the car and there was some spots. so i pulled up the car and felt it and smelled the liquid, which im pretty sure is antifreeze. the antifreeze is like a brownish-orangy, not really too red looking. so im guessing its dexcool. i think since i need to go to work in an hour ill just check it out 2morrow. will i b able to just duct tape whatever is leaking if its a tube or what shud i do? o yeah, when i started up the car and let it run 4 a little while the light didnt come on... im rather confused by this. im in need of some help guys.
