noob / waterpump question

Waterpumps fail and get the opti wet causing it to fail, correct? My car has 135k and I was thinking about getting a electric water pump.

Do electric water pumps give you more horsepower? ( )

A "stock" waterpump is driven off the belt right? Will I need a new serpentine belt or what?

Any tips? I found a decent deal on one and was just wondering if It'd be a good idea.

Thanks.

Re: noob / waterpump question

A failed waterpump could get an opti wet, although mine drained itself through the weephole
for a good 2-3 hours all over the driveway and didn't hurt it any.
A leaking gasket will cause coolant to leak onto the opti, and that could hurt it.
You'll want to cover your opti and drain your coolant before removing the water pump.

Eletric pumps don't so much make power, but they reduce the amount of HP lost trying to run the mechanical one. They run off electricity generated by the alternator.

On an LT1, the waterpump is driven by a shaft.
No pully, so no belt change is required.

Easy install, http://www.projecttransam.com/projects9.asp
Lots of pictures, details and even dyno results.

Re: noob / waterpump question

From what if heard...
1. when the stock pump starts to fail it leaks through the weep hole which has a strong possibility of getting the opti wet.
2. A EWP does FREE UP more by taking the drag off the engine that is used to turn the stock pump.
3. the stock pump is run off the camshaft not the belts so no different belts are needed.
4. if the car is a daily driver you should get something to monitor the EWP to make sure the pump is on (the car will get hot really quick if the pump isnt going, therefore it will damage it fast if not noticed quickly)

He is talking about if the pump fails then your motor is likely to blow a head gasket very quickly.

If ya go with an electric pump ya will have to remove the timing cover and remove the WP drive gear and plug the hole in the cover.

meaning getting a monitoring system to watch over the pump that will light up or sound when the pump fails or u get a burned wire, or etc...

i know there is one company that makes one or there is also an individual who makes them on the impalla ss forums

example http://impalassforum.com/noncgi/ulti...8;t=000199;p=1

his kit will be the one im getting when i do it, but i guess he only does group purchases
