Noisy rear-end

In the last couple thousand miles I've noticed, upon rleasing the clutch in each gear, a popping or clacking noise, when it engages. Nothing feels funny, and the car drives the same, just a noisy rear-end. Is it time to service the rear-end? What is actually involved with the service, just fluid change? Car has 49K

Does it sound like a "clunk"like maybe the u-joints have too much play (worn)?

Put it on a hoist and check the U-Joints and have mechanic listen for noise as you disengage the clutch. Starting point. JMHO.
