no start after rebuild - spark question (edited ?)

I can't get my engine started after a stock rebuild with a small cam. I have a new battery, coil, plugs and wires, but i reused my opti. I bought a spark tester that you hold on to the plug wire and it flashes everytime a pulse goes through the wire. It seems to be sparking at an irregular pattern on some of the wires. I think there should be spark at a consistent rate on each wire. Is this correct? What could cause this?

My questions is: If the opti was installed on the spline correctly (nonvented), would a bad opti result in what seems like random sparks?

Hard to say what output you would get from an opti that was not working properly. Make double sure you got all the plug wires on in the right places.
