No OIL pressure...use THICKER oil???

94, Z28

The hotter my engine gets, the less oil pressure i get, until it eventually goes to 0 psi..... My buddy said that it's my bearings (so did the techs on here in a previous post) and if i use "thicker" oil (20/50) that i should be alright????

Is that recommended? How long can i get away with it?

Re: No OIL pressure...use THICKER oil???

are there any noises coming from the valvetrain or bottom of the motor? No oil pressure can be very bad... I would look for the problem unstead of changing oil and hoping. oil pump sounds like it needs some help?

Tear it down and fix the problem. Thicker oil is nothing more than a bandaid prolonging the inevitable.

Put some 20/50 dino in it and see. It may make it go a little longer, but it's going to need a rebuild SOON. Don't be racing it in this condition as it may go BOOM.

Sometimes old oil pressure sensors die when they get hot. Try changing the sensor or verify the pressure with a mechanical gauge.

Ditto on what shoebox said.I have seen sending units go bad and nothing is really wrong.Replace the sending unit and see what happens they aren't that much. Our old shop truck the gauge barely moves and after 8 years I know the thing has pressure. Also if you had NO oil pressure you would be hearing a lot of noise coming from your valve train!

Verify with a mechanical oil pressure guage.

Sorry, i forgot to mention..... i did change the oil pressure sensor, no joy. And, i did the unplugging of the sensor, and the gauge shot all the way up, so i don't think it's the sending unit....

The "mechanical" oil pump tester sounds like a good idea.... i take it i screw it in where the oil pressure sensor is???

Thanks
