Angry No first gear..what happened?

well this post is for a friend of mine who has a 94 caprice with an LT1(retired cop car). He stoped at a light yesterday and when he started to go again the trans. would not shift into first. Since then the car always starts in second, and it wont even down shift into first (as if there is no longer a first gear). Just the other day it rained really hard and going through an area of deep water he actually stalled his car out There was not a problem after that for a few days but maybe that has something to do with his car not going into first gear now. Thanks guys any help would really be appreciated.

so, he went through the puddle, then at a later time the tranny wont go into first? or is it the other way around.

well, the comp controls all of that, not sure if that could have caused the problem though.

Question

Sounds like a previous problem i was having on my 94 z28 auto.
The car would start off in 2nd gear and you would punch it and it would lag and hesitate and begin to pick up and then shift into 3rd and overdrive. Sometimes in the morning on my way to work 1st gear would for about 10 mins. driving and then back to 3 gears again. Then I started to notice that overdrive would not kick in so i had the " special edition 2speed 460le automatic tranny" which consisted of 2nd and 3rd until one day after pumping gas i was making a left and gave it gas and i guess it tried to downshift from 3rd ( it was a yellow light turning red ) and i hear a loud clunk and grinding and stop.....from there on i couldnt get my car to go no more than 5mphs. Took it to a
Transmission shop and it was the tranny. I did an overhaul and while at it dropped a B & M Shift kit that i had for year but never decided to install it because it wears out your tranny twice as fast and it runs great now...might want to take it to a tranny shop........oh yeah....before the tranny gave out it was driveable for about 4months so you still have time....
