Nitrous Users and LT1 Perf. gurus

I need some help, my car has mods in sig, and i have about 700 dollars to spend, but I cant decide on what to do. I would like more power of course but I was wondering which would be the better choice..cam or nitrous...my car has 113k on it great compression a heavy duty timing chain and runs very well except for a slight miss EVERY NOW AND THEn when its hot at about 5900 rpms (prolly needs a tune) so if anyone could help with some advice on what you would do with the money i work so hard for thatd be sweet Thanks

To do nitrous right, its going to cost more than $700.
HSW kit, 400
Heater, $150
Purge, ~80
Mallory 685 $250
Fuel pump, $150
blow down tube, $40
Metal elbow, $100
+ I'm sure I'm missing misc stuff too.

It adds up fast. But I'm addicted to nitrous now that I have it.

You can cut some of those costs though.

You dont need a metal elbow, or a heater. And you can get by without purging.

You just have to be a little more careful with bottle pressure without the heater. Definatly do a fuel pump though, and a WOT, Window, and FPSS.

Re: Nitrous Users and LT1 Perf. gurus

Thanks for the help so far, but is nitrous the best way to go? Id like to be running 12.5x times by winter so either a cam or nitrous will get me there. Im really a noob when it comes to nitrous so if someone can explain the difference between a wet shot and dry shot and why I need certain things and dont need them(ie safety precautions) would be great. Ive heard many a story that ends with a bang at the track cuz someone missed a gear. Being that my car is a DD I dont know how risky a cam or nitrous would be. Thanks again

If you are the patient type the best thing you can do is headers. This will prep your car for whatever else you intend to do in the future and will multiply the effects. As speed_demon24 said, $700 leaves you wanting with nitrous. I have over a grand in it all and I don't expect to see mid 12s with it either. I can't imagine a cam alone doing nearly as much for you as the nitrous but a cam with headers and nitrous and you will have more power than your axle can stand....

I do have headers and some other bolt on goodies. My car has run a best 13.12 @ 108 last spring on new DR's so i am thinking a 100 shot and a tune will yield hopefully a half sec quicker maybe more. Am I off at all with my predictions?

Nitrous will be alot easier to install and yield some more power versus just a cam swap. As noted above, if you want it done right, you may spend a little more then 700. The total cost for my nitrous install was in the 1200.00 ballpark.

+1

My Nitrous install all said and done eclipsed $1000 as well.

If you're only shooting for mid 12s -- then a cam would definately be able to get you there with traction.

Re: Nitrous Users and LT1 Perf. gurus

My first nitrous install ran me about 900-1000.

This time around I have right at 350 invested in mine and here is a list of the stuff I have already:

Mallory 685
Nitrous Works Plate Kit
Remote Bottle Opener
All switches, relays, and wire I need
Bottle mount
Heater

I need a purge and WANT some gauges to finish off the install.

Yep, that reminds me, I forgot about the gauges, that will run another few hundred bucks if you go with a nitrous pressure and fuel pressure gauge. I have to do that soon to finish things off.

Come on guys... don't sugar coat it . You are going to have to budget at least $300 in nitrous fills (about 6 10 lbs tanks). If you do it the right way you will waste 1 tank on the dyno getting it set perfect, and checked. then the next 2-3 fills will go kinda fast. You know how it is... new toy just gotzzzta show your friends, AND smoke the car that made you get it.

Remember, the first 2 shots are the best in any given fill, after that the hit is softer and softer. If you have less than 2 lbs in the bottle you will barly feel it.

I would say go with a hot cam kit. Cheap, easy, does not need any supporting mods beyond what you have now. Then get the bottle next summer. My best hot cam + n20 was 11.18.
Good luck.

Go for a low shot nitrous setup, be safe and you should be fine. Try ebay for the NX setup. Doing a cam swap is a lot of work and does decrease driveability even if its only slightly. Either way you go tho good luck
