new piston rings?
new piston rings?
i bought a car for parts and tore the engine apart and found no cylinder rigde. the car read 155k on the odometer i was told if it wasnt burning oil not to replace the rings anyone ever had the same situation
Re: new piston rings?
Remember the ridge is about 1/4" down the bore, not at the top edge. It's where the rings stop traveling up.
Do a compression check, and if it's good then you're probably okay if you really don't want to change them.
If it was me, since the engine is apart, a machine shop will usually only charge about $40 or less to remove the ridge and hone the cylinders, then a new set of performance rings will cost you about $75 or so.
So for about $115, you won't have to worry about them for another 150K miles.
