Just to update, I tried a two different opti harness's on the car in question, still the same problem. So I removed the opti last night and will be getting a new one today. We must have got a bad one

Pretty irritating. You'd think for how expensive these darn optis are, plus the fact of how hard they are to get to, that AC Delco could build the damn things right the first time

I'll be darn sure to plug the next new opti in and make sure I've got spark before I put the water pump on this time

EDIT: Before anyone asks, I did check when I removed the opti... and yes, it was indexed properly.

i guess people are ignoring my post, i had the exact same thing happen when i ordered my opti from jegs. They are sending out opti's that are totally timed wrong. Call them defective but i went threw 3 of them, all the same thing, before i finally switched to a gm distributer and msd cap and rotor. and now have no problems.

I wasn't ignoring you...I did not get this opti from Jegs. It IS an actual AC delco opti from the dealer. And it's defective.

I'm wondering if the screws in the opti which hold the rotor are loose.

In our case, I removed the distributor cap and Lock-tited the rotor screws before we installed the new Opti. I did this based on advice I got from this board.

Ok, I kinda feel like a retard

Got to messing with the car again last night, and found that the white wire that goes to the ICM in the driver's side wire loom had been cut to splice in an aftermarkert tach by the previous owner. Well, when he sold the car, he removed the tach...aparently very quickly without regards to the wire that it was attached to

So after I found the severed wire, we quickly sodered it back together and heatshrinked it, put the opti back on (yes, the same opti that I thought was defective ) and buttoned up the rest of the motor....and then....

...Man that Joe O cam thumps nice

Is it possible to put the rotor on wrong? I've never taken an opti apart so I honestly don't know.

There's a dowel on it, so you can't put it on wrong. On the GM units anyways. I can't speak for the aftermarket optis though.
