New Motor Wont Start PLease Help Guys

OK first off I would like to just say that im not an idiot LOL So no need for the is the starter connected and so on questions
Got a new motor from APE engineering... Just the shortblock though.
Its a new cam too
Anyways I installed the cam and crank at 0 up
You know cam at 6 oclock crank at 12....

Heres my prob the car will crank but wont start and every now and again it will backfire but it is only backfiring after I have primed the fuel pump a few times or tried to start it a bunch of times.
Car has a walbro pump and I know its getting gas..
I grounded a plug wire and know its getting spark
But maybe it isnt getting consistant spark....
Im thinking it could be the opti which is fairly new but maybe I got it wet or something while it was sitting out of the car for the last 8 months
The car is a 97 OBD2 I went through and connected all sensors except for air which is deleted and rear 02s and the crank position sensor because of my double roller..
Correct me if Im wrong but doesnt the CPS sensor just measure for misfires and will not cause the car to not start..
Also I have the valve lash loose right now because I was going to adjust them right when the car starts.
It cranks normal like it should just will not start.. All wires are at the right cylinders and all grounds and cables are connected

PLEASE HELP ME I havent driven the car since last june and just put 3k worth of drivetrain alone in it that I would like to beat the crap out of.. Im jsut geting real frustrated with it.. If anyone lives in chicago area and would be willing to come by I could give ya some cash but I dont have alot of money.. I can fix computers and such though or maybe build one for ya that would be plenty fast for like 100 bucks.

Thanks again guys in advance.....

Also if anyone has an extra 95+ opti lying around that maybe I could just test with or buy for cheap that may help because I really am leaning towards that being it

I'm thinking something is off at the cam or the opti. Why don't you put 1 at TDC. While you're doing that, watch the relationship of the valves to the position of the piston. Once it's there, pull the cap off the opti and see if the rotor is pointing toward the number 1 cylinder contact inside the cap.

when number 1 is at tdc the valves shouldnt move at all correct? Or how should they move while its moving up? Oh I tried again today and it just backfires...Is there anyway I could have put the timing chain 180 degrees off?
I brought 1 to TDC and then slid the cam in and lined them up dot to dot cam at 6 and crank at 12

180 of will still work b/c #1 and #6 are both at TDC. Sounds to me like you put the opti on wrong. Had the EXACT same thing happen to a buddy of mine and he just put the damn opti on incorrectly even though he replaced one in the past w/o any trouble.

It can be done. My buddy knew what he was doing but since the pin fit he thought everything was ok and bolted it down.

do u think it might not start just from tuning problems...its on a stock tune except for being programmed for the 30 lb injectors

Are the rockers so loose that you might not be getting compression?

its possible but could the motor still backfire with no compression... I know that at least some of them are tight enough for compression... I need to get a hol of a compression tester thouh to be sure...

The motor will run excessively rich but it will still run with a stock tune. Well i use the term run loosely.. it will easily fire up for a short while at least.

Re: New Motor Wont Start PLease Help Guys

You mentioned you had the CPS removed then later said the tuning was stock except for 30 Lb injectors.

I know the CPS is there for misfire diagnostics, but could that be a problem? Are your ECM grounds grounded good? (On the block)

When you tested the spark did you let it turn over and get multiple sparks or did you simply get one spark? If you only got one spark you could have ign module trouble and such.

It sounds like timing though to me.

Re: New Motor Wont Start PLease Help Guys

yup grounds should be good and cps sensor shouldnt make it not run...also i did get multiple sparks from wire for first cylinder which means the module should be alright... I guess ill check to make sure opti is on right but Im all almost positive it is since it is sitting flush in side the timing cover... I guess I could put a screw driver in number 1 cylinder and see if the intake and exhaust valves do anything while the cylinder is coming up then I would at least know if the chain is lined up right...

I wouldn't use a screwdriver though, use a wooden dowel or a pencil. You're gona have to pay real close attention to the valve timing to detect if the chain is off by one tooth though. Last, check the rotor alignment. If you have fuel, spark and compression and it still doesn't fire up. The spark timing is off. Just got off the phone with someone who put his vented opti on wrong. I still fail to understand how anyone can do that.

Re: New Motor Wont Start PLease Help Guys

you would seriously have to pound the thing on to install it wrong.. Also if it was just one tooth off I think it would still start... I guess im gonna just have to pull the opti
