any other comforting opinions on the starter before I try it out this evening would be appreciated

of course I guess I can handle some other bad thoughts on it. again I don't think its as bad as I think it is

Definatly sounds like the starter/ flywheel. Sounds like you tripped over something in the end there.

ok, pulled the starter and now im a little stumped as for what exactly im looking for. I see on the gear of the starter where it looks to have been chewed a little(probably from spinning on on the teeth of the flywheel???)
when the starter is bolted up I can't really see anything...oil pan is in the way somewhat. should I just take it to autozone to test it? I know it spins no problem.

I have heard of people putting shims between the starter and the block, but would that just place the starter further away, thus allowing it to make less, if any contact with the flywheel??

and I somehow broke a bolt for the dust/inspection cover oh well...not important...

It sounds like you finding that the starter doesn't extend enough to fully contact the flywheel, but if it was the same flywheel then it should be in the same place. So, this points to the starter not having enough extension, or it's spinning before it fully extends...

Was this the stock starter? If not does it have teh correct tooth count/patern?

its an LT4 starter that is a couple of years old now. was bought just because the last starter finally died. would a test at autozone or oreilly's show that it may not be extending far enough?? I can't really measure very well when its on, but eyeballing it I would say the gear is about 1/2 an inch from the the flywheel.

I say pull the slave cylinder and the aluminum extension that it bolts to. then look at the presure plate and see if the fork has been hitting it.

starter works perfect. so I guess if that it is the starter...I need to get it to match up to the flywheel better than it is somehow

Are you sure the flywheel is alright. I know this sounds stupid but I have never had to shim my starter. Are you sure the flywheel is tight, not crockid. There are only 2 parts you are dealing with.

pretty sure. I turned the motor by hand to try it on different part of the flywheel with same results
