Arrow New Mods on a 96 Z

Just trying to get an idea of some mods i could do to my car while its in my garage for the winter. I already have: K&N, Hypertech Power Programmer, and Hooker Super Comp Catback. Just trying to get some suggestions. Been looking into MAF sensor and have a limited budjet regarding that i have a rather large family and christmas is coming soon.

Don't waste your time with the MAF, go straight to the proven performance gainers: headers, mail-order tune,gears,tires, free mods. ect.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

Get pacesetter LTs if your on a budget. Forget the MAF sensor. Look into 1.6 Rockers $300, ASP 23% Pulley $144 , E-WP $150, all of these are effective bolt ons.

Launch, sticky tires like DR's or ET streets, Edge TQ Converter, gears.

PS sell your Hypertech after to return it to the stock tune. PM Madwolf.

Watch out, if you go with a sticky tire you could blow your rear. I would run some Nitto 555's till you get a 12 bolt.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

MAF did nothing for me but give a lil more pull in the upper rpm's, thats about all i noticed nothing too great.

I have a 34% underdrive crank pulley and it added not nearly enough, i think they add a lot more onto m6's than auto's personally, if you find one cheap go for it, if not it can wait. It rev's up a lil quicker though

If youre looking for a good launch go with tires, i recommend bf goodrich KDW or KD? Whichever their top line is for traction, they are suppose to be the top of the line for dry traction, i have a set of 315's on the back of my car and didnt break loose really at all until lately.

Great launch = stall. Go with a good brand stall and tires and you will be set for a hell of a launch. One of the best mods youre going to do for an auto in my opinion.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

I like my vig 2800 but if did it again think would have went vig 3000 or 3200. I also went to 3.42 gears I hated the 2.73's. You can tell your gears if you look at your console. If you have a 1 on there you have 3.23 and if you have a 2 only and no 1 you have 2.73. I like 3.42 but lots of guys go to 3.73s. Much better feeling around town with the 3.42 or 3.73s.
Headers are also next best bang for the buck . I am getting kooks stainless but mac mids are pretty good budget choice and make plug chances much simpler.
Cams work but a bit of pain to install .1.6 rockers are good mod too and not that hard to do but changing springs with heads in the car is a pain in the butt.
Little stuff like underdrive pulleys don't do much in lt1s. I got a used asp balancer underdrive off board and put it on.It may help slightly. I also bolted on a 58 tb without porting the intake yet and 30 pound svos but these mods were in prep for my planned long tube,CC305,1.6 pro mag and LE2 heads plans for next spring.I doubt you will see much from going to the bigger tb and injectors don't do much for power only when you have power to point you need the bigger ones.
So back to what we said..oh one more good cheap mod.cutout is a good idea. I had electric controller deals from dmh and qtp but both rattled when closed and the qtp broke down. I sold off both of them to guys that said didn't care about the rattles when closed .I am going to try a new brand this time..pro street I think it is.different design but a cheap 20 dollar manual cutout works fine and does add some decent power.
Of course if you want big power fast you can go to spray but then to do it right you need accessories which drive up the price..window switch, bottle warmer,maybe opener,timing retard,etc.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

Oh forgot to mention.If you do add any of this big power stuff ,headers, stall,gears etc. you will not hook up on street tires ,well most street tires and will actually become slower off the line.
I bought nittos and they help a lot and make the car much faster off the line. I got some additonal benefit from my spohn torque arm and my lower control arms helped launch the car straight and reduce wheel hop. I got bmr relo brackets since my car is dropped with hotchkis springs.
My kyb agx also help the car launch better for track use.

Tires are the most important thing. Lots of guys have faster cars than me on paper but on the street on street tires they are slower than crap. On the track with their et streets they are faster. The nitto drag radials are very streetable and have decent tread life.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

E-WP = Electric Water Pump
DR's = Drag Radials
TQ = Torque
PM = Private Message
LT's = Longtubes

Hope that helps some.

He has an automatic, sticky tires with his limited mods will most likely not break the rear. I have been running my 10 bolt with my mods for a while and have had several hard launch's.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

i would say if you are on a budget go with the free mods, seeing as how they are free anyways, like throttle body coolant bypass, it is super easy to do and keeps the hot *** coolant out of your throttle body (colder air is denser and promotes combustion=hp) pacesetter long tubes are a good buy for the money. if you want to start with suspension, parts are cheap if you buy them one at a time. lower control arms are like a hundred bucks through www.summitracing.com , panhard bar, torque arm etc. they will all help your car launch better and handle much better. mail order tune not a bad idea considering you can sell your hypertech and take the money and get a mail order. you probably wouldnt lose much at all. order a summit catalog and look in their lt1 section, they have tons of stuff. from what i have heard, dont bother with the maf, you can get headers for pocket change more and have a night and day difference.

Re: New Mods on a 96 Z

Headers? Pocket Change? Dude, I pay my own insurance and bought both my cars, have a 88 escort pony for a winter beater. The long tubes i've been looking at are around 500 and thats not including the collector or the gaskets. And i have to put tires on my escort. Left a 20' skid mark on a main road in town cuz some ******* was in the middle of an intersection and decided not to move and only sit there. so now i have to buy tires
