new engine running but i have a problem

I finally got my new motor running. The exhaust is smoking like crazy. i think its coming from the y pipe where it meets the manifolds and on the bottom end. This is my stock exhaust. I didn't put any gaskets in there b/c there weren't any in there when i took it off. Could this be stuff burning off (i've only run it for 5 minutes)? Is there any damage I could to driving it this way?

Thanks

I haven't seen any systems that don't require gaskets, but which one are you running? More details would be helpful. It's not uncommon for a bit of gaskets/fluids to burn-off on a new engine, but when you say "smoking like crazy"...that's a bit concerning. You need to figure out where it's coming from for sure...

Did you adjust the valves with the valve covers off? If so, there is probably oil all over your exhaust. It took mine a long, long time to burn. And it looked like a bbq!

Its stock. I'm not saying there shouldn't be any gaskets in there. I'm saying there weren't when i took them off and it wasn't smoking. So I thought i could get away with no gaskets when I put them back on. I really am hoping to get but with this stock exhaust for a couple months still i can find some time to put new exhaust on. You know how tight it is in there. I can't tell exactly where it is coming from, but when I fired it up, I thought i had a #8 wire barbicue. Shortly there after the drivers side was smoking. I look under the car and i had smoke before the cat. I'm gonna see if I can get it out of the garage and test drive it.

No the valve covers went on before the exhaust. But thats not to say I didn't some how get oil on them. Maybe (hopefully) thats it.

If the car is running smoothly, I'll bet its just fluids burning off.
Plus, oil takes a while to burn off completely and its a dark smoke.
