New Coil.. Which One
There is nothing wrong with just using another factory Delco coil. Otherwise, you could always opt for an MSD replacement. Check out the supporting vendors if you want an MSD coil. Otherwise, one of these gentlemen can get you a decent rate for a Delco: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#Dal_and_Jason
No, there is notthing wrong with it. 93-95 stock coils are a little weaker than 96-97 coils. Therefore, you could potentially benefit by upgrading the earlier coils. It won't harm your opti, either.
what about the icm? i don't remember the formula for multiplying the output of the icm and coil but with the msd i remember it being super high.
With the resistance at the coil terminals being lower than stock coils, I would think the ICM would have an easier time switching the coil on and off.

Considering that I have committed to purchasing an MSD coil, I like shoebox's answers the best.
Does it make any sense to change out the ICM & Coil at the same time? I'm going to be putting in a new distributor and I'm looking to do some preventive maintenance. Is there anything preventive about putting in a new ICM, or coil for that matter? Do those parts wear out? Also, do the service manuals use the terms Ignition Control Module & Ignition Coil Module interchangeably?

I had a MSD blaster coil on mine with the factory opti it wasn't worth having. After i put the MSD distribitor in i put that coil back on and it was fine.....If your going to do it do it right and up the entire firing system.
