New coil; which one?

I think just for kicks I'm going to replace my coil. I do believe it's the factory coil (163K miles)...so it wouldn't hurt.

Question:
Replace with OE or aftermarket OE specs; or with something like Accel, MSD, Hypertech, etc.

I'd like Pro's and Con's. I'm basically stock with headers, exhaust, CAI, and some PCM tweaks. No spray or anything like that, if that needs to be taken into consideration.

Personally I would go with either MSD or Accel. I have heard of too many stories of Crane Igntion coils crapping out.

I've had an Accel Supercoil on my car for quite some time with no problems.

Good question, ive been wondering the same thing, im leaning in the direction of just getting another acdelco stocker coil in there. Make sure you replace the wire to. So whats better about the aftermarket coils?

Yea, I've got an MSD and a Taylor with its name on it.

i would personally get the delco coil. when i replaced the coil i did not know what to get. i did a search on here for coils and found out that more people had problems with the aftermarket one. however, if i was to buy aftermarket, i would buy an accell. do a search and see what comes up. good luck

If you go with an aftermarket coil, make sure that your ingition system is up to par. You said that you have 163K miles on the car, make sure that you have gone to at least some high perf. plug wires (Taylor, MSD, etc...). If you don't you will have a plethora of problems ranging from arcing to not starting. I say this because I got an MSD coil and I was getting arcing on the coil as well as the car being VERY hard to start when it was cold. I sent the coil back and did some searching, and it turned out to be the coil wire. It was corroded and measured infinite resistance, so I was wasting my time with the coil!

No coil will increase the voltage output to the secondary ign. the coil outputs exactly the voltage need to create a path through the wire and jump the arc of the spark plug and find ground. The only reason you would ever need a better coil than stock is if you had much higher than stock cylander prssure or a larger than normal plug gap which would increase a spark demand. If you are going to say, "I put on a aftermarket coil now my car runs smother" then your old coil was bad or the aftermarket coil is powerful enough to mask a problem (bad engine ground, slightly damaged wire, or carbon on plug) FYI, most aftermarket coils are made by AC-Delco, Including MSD, I called and asked them when I was shopping for one. Buy it If you like the color or want another line on your mods list.

Thanks for the input and for clearing that up. Looks like I'll go stocker, since that's all I really need. I wasn't thinking the Aftermarket's did much different, but wasn't sure.

Thanks!

Question

Where can I get just a new coil wire already crimped for the LT1?

Would this MSD coil wire work or no? Doesn't look like it would fit into the spot to get onto the opti.

Hmm... if ACDelco makes the MSD coil, they don't make them the same as the stock ones. My MSD has ~2800 ohms less resistance than the stock coil. Who is to say a stock coil is adequate to begin with?

28k ohms less resistance??
hmm, I didnt know that, but you say that like its a bad thing.
more Ohms in the secondary probibly means more coils in the secondary = a higher potential in output.
Call MSD and ask em. Mabye you will get a different answer.

No, 2.8k ohms if you calculate correctly. I did not say that was bad at all. I expect less resistance to mean more potential output.
