New car, oil sending unit in wrong place & no temp guage sensor
New car, oil sending unit in wrong place & no temp guage sensor
Ok, so i just bought this car a week ago.93' Z28 (man. date 5/93) Been, wanting a f body for a decade. The test drive went smooth except for the temp guage not working. When I got back home, about an hour drive, my oil pressure guage would dip to about 10 psi sometimes lower. But, since the car is running so good I thought maybe its just the sending unit. Bought a sending unit today. The sending unit is behind the intake not above the oil filter! WTH!?
And the temp sensor is snapped off.... any way to get the guage to work without that sensor?
any opinions or thoughts?

Has the engine been replaced with a newer LT1? They moved the oil pressure sensor to the back of the block, behind the intake, early in the 1994 model year.

There is no way the coolant temp gauge is going to work without a sensor. How is it "snapped off"? No way to get a wrench of vise grips on it? Alternatively, you could pull the pipe plug out of the matching hole in the passenger side head, between #6 and #8 and locate a new temp sensor there.

Awesome, thats the kind of info i was looking for! Ill have to do that. Its snapped off like flush with the block. I was thinking about drilling it out, then tapping in new threads but, ill just hook it up to the other side. I didnt even think about that. Does anybody have a picture of the sensor and plug.... the plug for my temp sensor was cut off and the autoparts store has two sensors but i need to know what it looks like so i can get the right one.
As for maybe its a new engine. that was my theory. Are there some numbers somewhere i can look at and find out?

You can determine the year of the engine from the partial VIN stamped on the driver's side, at the back.

Typically, they carry two differnt connectors, a 2-pin for the coolant temp sensor on the water pump housing (feeds the ECM) and a 1-pin connector for the sensor in the head.

Re: New car, oil sending unit in wrong place & no temp guage sensor
Welps that's the pig tail I need. I'm gonna check the parts store first before I socumb to the $25 minimum. My buddy works at the GM dealer here so my next day off I will get the sensor from there.
So far on the low oil pressure issue. I pulled the dip stick ran it across my finger and saw one piece of glitter. Drained the oil it looked like it had never been changed. There was also a leak from the oil filter, which is what made me think it was the sending unit in first place. Until of course, I found out the sending unit isn't where it's supposed to be. I refilled it with 10w-30. Started it, let it run for about 15-20 min and it never got below. 10-15psi. And, I shifted thru the old oil pretty good. No, glitter.
Normally at start up it jumps to 40psi stays there until it slowly goes down after it warms up and I rev it a few times. While revving during I tail start up it goes to 50-60psi. Maybe I got lucky.
