Need some insight

Hello,
I have an LT1 with a manual transmission.
I was driving my car down the highway and heard a loud pop followed by complete power loss. When I took it out of gear my RPMs plummeted and my engine died. It cranks, but will not start. Would anyone have any insight as to what might have happened?
Thanks,
D

Re: Need some insight

Have you scanned it for codes? Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Re: Need some insight

It’s not throwing any codes and my fuel pump is cycling when I turn the ignition on.

Re: Need some insight

Check to see if you are getting spark. If you get spark at the coil wire and no plug wires, you had sudden opti rotor failure (which is common for your trouble description).

Re: Need some insight

Did you have spark?

The fact the fuel pump primes when you turn the key does not guarantee you have adequate fuel pressure.

What did you use to scan it for codes?

Re: Need some insight

The rotor completely melted, the sensor was still working after having molten pieces of plastic bouncing around down there.

Re: Need some insight

Hopefully MSD has solved their latest round of Opti problems. Generally not recommended. Watch for sudden surging at idle, up to as high as 2,500 RPM, due to RFI interference from the cap to the optical module. It was a major problem earlier this tear, on units manufactured over a 2 year period. They only figured it out after I sent them PCM data logs showing the cause-and-effect relationship between the spurious RPM signals from the Opti and the reaction to them with the PCM continuously bumping up the IAC counts.

Good luck.
