need some help from the gear heads

Ok here it is. I own a 97 z28 and latley i've been havin some problems. At first it seemed like my tranny was almost slipping so i checked my trans fluids and they weren't even on the stick!.. so needless to say i filled up and still trouble. I would press on the the gas, the engine would rev and the car would barley move untill it got to about 3k then i would start to pick up. Once it got to the proper shift point(auto) it would shirft, the rev would drop and it repeats it's self. I was told maybe it was a bad trans filter so i dropped the pan and changed it, then refilled all my fluids to no avail... if anyone has had simalar problems or might know what it is please drop me a line.. if you need more info just ask and i will post all that i know.. thanks for the help guys...

Question

Did you find anything in the pan or built up on the magnet?

ok, in responce to the question if i found anything, yes. There was a layer of metal shaving on the magnet(fine dust more than shavings) I asked a few knowlagable people and they said the amount that i had was normal. I didn't remember smelling anything burt, but the fluid was rather dark, wasn't black by anymeans but was a deep red, almost brown but not quite. Do you think that the tranny needs to be rebuilt? If so do you think i could take this task head on or should i leave it to the pros? Also i was thinking maybe a tourqe converter problem... am i just off on that one or is that another possibility?

pump

Sounds like the pump on your tranny to me. Take and put a gauge on the main transmission line fitting and see what your fluid pressure is.

If you don't own your haynes manual yet, now's a good time to get one.

You might have burnt out your clutches when you ran very low on fluid.

A rebuild generally means a new converter as well. But not always.

I JUST had my tranny rebuilt. My mechanic threw in a new converter and rebuilt everything like new. Your problems sounded similar to mine (except i still had fluid in). Because your fluid was so low and you had similar problems id say you'd probably need a new converter, plus it gives u a warm and fuzzy feeling inside to have a new converter with a slightly higher stall :0
