Need smog legal shortys

Searched the foroum before hand and came up kinda empty handed.
I'm looking for coated shorty headers for my 95 z28. They MUST be smog legal.
I've read good things about slp, but they are pricey. Anyone have any facts? Advice? Pics are welcome!!

Why is everyone so worried about emissions, just find a cool person that does inspections and let them do it. Get Long tubes... But if you REALLY insist, i have hooker shorties and they are..well okay i guess... But i have a set of LTs coming in the mail

My car had the shorties on when i got it, otherwise i'd have put on longtubes. I know plenty of people here passing emissions with longtubes...so long as they got CATS on. The inspectors here have no idea what the stock location of the CATS are, as long as they are there and look like they are in the right place they pass you.

I live in cali where they are very **** and I know for a fact that all shorties can pass out here. And like said previously find a cool guy and he'll pass u. There's this pretty cool older korean guy that smog my friend's ls1 with lt's and didnt even give him a visual. We just sat there and talked cars with him and he said as long as it passes mechnical it was fine.

If u really want lt's go for it. There's always away to get around it. What u think about these guys with 383 and so on.......

I'm still looking for someone who can "bend" the inspecting rules, and I've already set my mind on shorties. So, are there any clearance issues? Plug access any different? I dont want to do any grinding, hammering, etc to get them to fit. What about the Hooker super comp shorty, or Edelbrock with the Ti-Tech coating?

Go to any random inspection place, and away from any kind of customers tell an inspector that your camaro has long tube headers and ask him if he'll pass you. If they say no, move on to another place. If its an oil change/inspection place, get your oil changed and while they're changing your oil bull**** with the workers and be cool with them. They might ask "hey man your inspection is due" and tell them whats up, if not ask them. ...It IS possible...

Re: Need smog legal shortys

Assuming your car is single cat, the only CA legal headers are SLPs, Hooker shorties and Edelbrocks. The SLPs have the most potential for hp because they have 1 /34 primaries. They cost more and they are stainless steel, not coated. I would expect the Hookers and Edelbrocks to make similar power. I have coated Hooker shorties. The headers fit well but the y pipe did not and it had to be modified at the muffler shop. Otherwise I'm happy with them. Clearance is the same as stock. But if you can spend the extra money I'd consider the SLPs.

If MAC's aren't smog legal i would probably go with SLP's as they will provide the best gains. The plug access isn't the best but i've heard of absolutely horrible plug access on the other 2 listed by Bud M.

Re: Need smog legal shortys

I believe jet hot had a sale recently on the hooker shorties witht he coated y-pipe...i would strongly suggest getting the hooker y-pipe witht he headers as it's mandrel band and will fit better. Mine are jet hot coated.

As for plug access my passenger side has 2 plugs that can be a pain to get at, ESPECIALLY on the #2 cylinder. I think getting the #2 plug in takes about as much time as all other 7 combined.

Another vote for hooker shorties . Whatever you end up getting get a set of good gaskets and some locking bolts IMO
