NEED: Reputable builder in Texas area. Mine QUIT!
NEED: Reputable builder in Texas area. Mine QUIT!
The short of it: (If you want to read the long-story then it's at the bottom)
My builder and the machinist quit working for this one company, and went off to start their own company. No clue how long until they're up and running.
I trust him as an individual, but not that he would do everything to the degree that I'd want it. (Example ordering me flat-top pistons for my setup without doing the math to see what the CR would be.) If I didn't catch that I'd be up ****s creek with a race gas engine LOL.
So, I'm in San Angelo, Texas. Don't really care where, Probably San Antonio, or Dallas or something. Need to still have the block mocked up & decked, and clearanced. Need someone with decent prices, knows chevy/LT1's somewhat preferably, maybe knows some of the tricks, won't steal my parts to resell and put their junk in it, and not take FOREVER...
Please let me know who you've got!
Here's some info on my combo:

Here's the long story:
I walked in today to talk to him about a gasket set and update him on my head situation, and the guy working sees me and goes "Guess what", I say "what's that?" he goes "Danny and David quit Friday, they don't work here anymore." My jaw about drops to the floor!
They both quit working FOR this place, and started up their own engine building business across the street in the original building before they moved.
My engine builder is Danny. David is the Machinist. Danny "ran" Landers Machine. It is owned by Mark. Mark also owns and runs Winger Machine across town.
So Danny & David quit Landers. All that's left is a couple parts/cleaning monkeys. All machine work is now done my Wingers, and they send the engines to Wingers for Mark to build.
From what Ron (parts/cleaning monkey) tells me, is that Mark might be a better bet than Danny anyways because it would be faster, and Mark's more into building race engines anyways.
But, I talked to a guy here in town who knows everything about everyone, and it seems that Mark's a pretty crooked bastard. He steered me away from Mark the first time around. From what I'm told, he's been known, when customers bring in a crate engine, to take the good camshaft out of that, sell it to make some $$, and stick an RV cam or something in it and tell the customer "that's how it is". The other incident I was told of was a customer brought in a set of ported heads with a personal marking to have a little bit of work done to them. When he goes to get his heads back, they're a different set of heads, they claim they're the same set though. He tells them "These are not my heads, mine had a personal marking, I'm going to leave, and come back in an hour. If my heads are not here and finished when I come back I'm going to the cops". When he came back, his heads were there.
So, I'm a bit leary about keeping my high dollar **** around for this ****er to steal from me. I didn't eat Ramen for a year straight for some cockknocker to take my parts!
I don't know about Danny and going to his new shp either.. I was kind of leary about him ordering me flat tops first time around, and not checking to see what the CR would be (Would have been ~12.8+:1). Some other little things too, he always seemed to misplace things. I'm also kind of peeved that I've got $1000+ worth of stuff sitting in there and nobody bothered to tell me WTF was going on.
So, what I'm going to do I guess is go in tomorrow at lunchtime, gather up all my **** and pull it out of the shop, pay for the machinework that was done, and see if there's any reputable builders who won't steal my ****, and know the LT1 a little bit, down here in Texas.
