Thumbs up need new brakes, pads/rotors

ok everyone! i hate to say it but the guy that owned my car before warped the rotors pretty bad and i need new front ones and pads. now what do you guys usually get when its time for you to replace your pads/rotors. ok heres my only condition. i want some good aftermarket pads and rotors, but i dont want cross drilled/slotted rotors. i have always read that they are not better than your regular rotor without the cross drilling or slotted ones. unless they are like brembo or wildwood, but i am not paying 1000+ for my brakes lol. so i want discs that look like stock but are aftermarket. that are the best deal. also i want good pads. i dont want to get stock replacements unless i have to because for a little more money if i can get better pads/rotors than ill go that route but if not i will get stock replacements. so what do you all have and how much and where can i get them?? thanks!

I dont think we have any options for a better rotor. Maybe an ls1 brake swap is what your looking for.

You can get a good front brake kit from Brembo for like $600. That's the route I would go if I were you. You can get them in just a regular rotor too.

Yeah, according to most people on here, nothing works so you are on your own.

If the crossdrilled and slotted rotors I bought this last time don,t last then I will go back to doing what I did before, replace the rotors everytime I do the pads.

what exacltly are the differences of an ls1 brake setup swap from the lt1. bigger rotors? 2 piston calipers? and what exactly are all the parts i need and is it easy to do? is it a direct swap, anyone done this? how much?? if its just putting on new rotors and pads than that sounds easy but how mcuh?

DO NOT spend a lot of money on “high performance” pads and rotors. They are simply not worth it.

The by far best value in brakes for the LT1 is the LS1 brake setup. Their breaking ability is FAR superior to that of the LT1 brakes and you don’t have to spend a ton on pads and rotors. LS1 brakes have bigger rotors and aluminum duel piston calipers.

What you need:
LS1 steering knuckles (the big things that go in between your control arms)
LS1 calipers
-Caliper mounting bolts
-Caliper mounting brackets
-Caliper guide pins.
Rotors and pads if needed (usually they will sell you this stuff as a kit and rotors and pads will come with it, the condition will vary. You may need new ones you may not)

You can get this stuff from a salvage yard, E-bay, or cruse the for-sale sections of cz28.com and LS1.com for people parting out LS1's. I was lucky and found someone parting out an LS1 on e-bay. I e-mail him and got the stuff I needed for $75 shipped.

You can reuse your LT1 brake lines, just bend the bracket down to give you enough length.

Lets talk LS1 rotors:
Rotors are rotors, you don’t need cross drilled or slotted. The only determining factor would be how long they last. But the fact is, no matter what you buy, they will warp, and warp quickly. Thus, the best rout is to buy cheap rotors that have a good warrantee and then cash in on the warrantee when (not if) they warp. Advanced Auto Parts has rotors for $40 that have a year warrantee. I recommend those. I autocross with them and they work GREAT. They will warp in a few months and I will get new ones for free.
OR:
You could get some expensive rotors for 2 or 3 times more, have them last the same amount of time, and not be able to get them replaced because none of the aftermarket companies give good warrantees. You be the judge.

As for pads:
I don’t know. I have never had to buy pads for my LS1 brakes. But I am sure someone can give you some recommendation.

ok well i ahve an autozone, napa, and advacned here and some other locals im going to call them all to get the price quotes on my rotors/pads and i know autozone has lifetime warrantee on their pads/rotors. but why do you guys say brakes warp a lot on my last car i drove 20k miles on brand new brakes/pads and they arent warped a bit they stillw ork like new. im easy on my brakes unless i neeed em if that adds to it. also one more thing, when installing the new rotors/pads the lt1's, do you have to take the hub off/bearings or does the rotor jus come off when you take the caliper mounting brackets off?

No thanks

Mine came from a salvage yard and are sitting in my garage waiting for me to stop being lazy and put them on. I don't need any more "steering knuckles" .

I always heard them called spindles, but the hub design is a lot different than an older car like I am used to. I guess that might be the reason GM called them something different?

I guess you learn something new everyday, huh.

I wonder if those Brembos on the top of that page are any good?

Just put on AutoZone blanks and Perf Friction Carbon Metallics from AutoZone as well. I also flushed the brake system with new fluid, Ford HD. Works just fine for my daily driver.

The rotors were cheap ... less than $20 a piece for the rears, and less than $30 a piece for the fronts. The pads were in the $40-$50 range each pair for front and rear.

I also bought a hardware kit, the rubber sleeves for the fronts, new bolts, new bolt boots. I didn't rebuild the caliper pistons.

I'm happy, no squeals and they bedded just fine.

The rotors are not coated or painted so you might want to pick up some hi-temp paint and clear to help with the surface rust.

Unless they changed back to lifetime - the Autozone around here only offer 3month warrenty on rotors right now.

Make sure you ask if that is what your looking for (best warrenty).
